Grinnell Glacier, Glacier National Park, Montana
I just got off the phone with the Glacier people. The dates for the reunion are Thursday, Aug. 1 - Monday, Aug. 5 (check out). I, personally, plan to check in on Wed., July 31 so we can have a Thursday board meeting around 10:00AM. I have two places reserved for lodging--Glacier Park Lodge (15 rooms reserved now, trying to increasing to 20) and Many Glacier Hotel (10 rooms reserved). The dates I have held for our reunion are Wednesday, July 31 - Sunday, August 4--with a check out on Monday, Aug. 5th. I plan to have the board meeting(s) at Glacier Park Lodge, and both Friday and Saturday night dinners there, also.
Many Glacier Hotel is inside the park and nearest to Mt. Grinnell, Grinnell Glacier, and Grinnell Lake. I know some Grinnells want to stay nearest to George Bird Grinnell’s named areas--they are nearest to Many Glacier Hotel. On Saturday, I plan to utilize the Red Bus Tour bus for a tour of Glacier National Park with a stop at Many Glacier Hotel for lunch. On Sunday, with PASSPORTS in hand, I thought a lunch in Canada at the Prince of Wales Hotel would be nice. You can use the Red Bus or your personal car for transportation.
Room rates are as follows: Glacier Park Lodge (mostly two queens) are $175/night, Glacier--attached to the Glacier Park Lodge and disabled accessible are $180 without a balcony and $185 with a balcony. Many Glacier Hotel, inside the Park and near Mt. Grinnell, are $170--not lakeside, and $180--lakeside. Deposits are nonrefundable.
NOTE: The drive between the two hotels takes about TWO HOURS! Please plan accordingly!
Conveniences... Not Many
As a reminder, cellphone coverage in the Park area is nearly nonexistent. Room amenities DO NOT include bathtub (shower only), radio, internet, television, coffee maker, air conditioning, or mini refrigerator. These hotels were built in 1913 and 1915, and have had only limited renovations over the years, so things are pretty rustic. The Many Glacier Hotel does have limited Wi-Fi access for paid guests. There are no elevators so if you have mobility issues, reserve one of the ADA-accessible rooms as soon as possible. For those times when you are not exploring and taking in the gorgeous scenery, make sure you have brought some reading material, as well as iPods and portable video players for the kids.
The elevation is approximately 5,000 feet. Please take this into account if you have breathing issues.
The train station is across the street from Glacier Park Lodge. Glacier Park Lodge is on the eastern side of Glacier National Park and Many Glacier Hotel is inside the park. Air transportation flies into Great Falls, Montana and Glacier International Airport at Kalispell (closer to Glacier National Park). You would need to rent a car at the airport to get to your hotel of choice. I need to check, but I believe if you are 62 or older you can get a discounted Golden Park Pass. Make sure you have good maps or bring a GPS receiver to help you navigate through this area.
Please contact Amber Green at 1-406-892-6729 for your personal reservations. She will need a credit card for the first night’s lodging. These reservations can only be made by phoning; not by e-mail. Also, if you are traveling by train, Amber is the one to talk with about that.
I hope I have reserved enough rooms. This reunion seems like it is high on many Grinnell’s list for the summer of 2013! It should be a wonderful experience. Walking in George Bird’s “land” will be so very special. And, there are other activities available: golfing, horseback riding, hiking, and lots of beautiful scenery to take in and photograph--got to remember all the non-Grinnells who will be coming, too!
I hope all this information helps with your Summer, 2013 GFA plans. I’m looking forward to seeing you there!
The map of northwestern Montana (displayed above) shows the approximate locations of Glacier National Park, the Glacier Park Lodge, the Many Glacier Hotel, and nearby (relatively speaking) airports. Please refer to the Distances chart in the next column to give you an idea of the kind of distances you will need to cover.
We will be sending out registration forms later this year or very early next year.
