New GFA member Jonathan Caldwell (GFA #744) passed on this terrific link of a large slideshow presented by James Grinnell at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in October, 2011.

"The Grinnells & Howlands", presentation by James Grinnell

This presentation consisted of 185 slides telling the story of the Grinnell and Howland families of New Bedford, and their familial and business relationships over the years, and in so doing has put together the largest collection of information on these amazing and prosperous families. The online slideshow suffers from some performance glitches, as well as the erroneous adherence to 1931's Ancestry of the Grinnell Family by William M. Emery, which perpetuated the incorrect link to the French Grenelle family (something which was disproved in the late 1980s by several researchers, and whose British origins were validated by Jane Fiske of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society in the January, 1993 issue of The Register). That aside, the story of the New Bedford Grinnell and Howland families from the mid 1700s through the early 20th century, is well-documented from period Massachusetts newspapers, as well as the old gray lady herself, the New York Times.

This presentation is a must-see for anyone who is even remotely interested in the New Bedford Grinnell and Howland families, and certainly mandatory for anyone doing serious research on these families.
